It’s no secret that children love celebrating their birthday and all that goes with it! Birthday traditions created during childhood are special and often something children will carry with them to pass along to their own children someday! At Valley Child Care & Learning Center, we believe birthdays should be celebrated in a big way – check out these birthday traditions you can start at home this year!
Counting down to a special day is something the whole family can participate in! Paper chains are a classic way to give children a visual representation of days remaining in the countdown. Children can help create the paper chain by choosing their favorite colors of paper and helping to form the links! If you’d like to create a tradition of using the same countdown calendar each year, you can find a great option here!
What’s better than waking up to your own birthday celebration? This is an easy, meaningful gesture your child is sure to love! If possible, sneak into your child’s bedroom before they wake up and fill it with blown up balloons. If your child is old enough to read, have all family members write down kind things about the birthday recipient and put them inside of the balloons for your child to find!
Set aside a special plate that is ONLY used on a family member’s birthday. You can purchase these plates online or for an added experience, you and your child can create one together in a pottery painting class!
Throughout their childhood, children will experience many monumental experiences! Events such as starting Kindergarten, learning to ride a bike, going to their first sleepover, or riding a roller coaster for the first time are things you don’t want them to forget! This year, create a new birthday tradition and set aside a special album or journal you can pull out at each birthday to reflect on the past year and record new memories!
Books and songs we are repeatedly exposed to during childhood have the ability to leave impressions on us far into adulthood. There are many wonderful books you can choose to read to your child as a birthday tradition each year, a popular option is “On The Night You Were Born,” by Nancy Tillman.
At Valley Child Care & Learning Center, we love to be included in celebrating your child. If your child will be joining us for his or her special day, please be sure to let us know so we can celebrate them in class! Here are some pictures of a few recent birthday celebrations in our programs!
The most important part of your child’s birthday is that they feel loved and celebrated. Birthday traditions and celebrations will be as unique as your family, tell us about your family’s birthday traditions in the comments!
