Equipping children to grow into confident and capable adults in something all parents and caregivers work hard to achieve. During the fundamental toddler and preschool years, we can help children attain a growth mindset through tools such as positive affirmations. A growth mindset is described as the ability to face challenges head on and see them as an opportunity to grow and learn something new. The many different emotions and experiences throughout the days of toddler and preschool age children are the ultimate opportunity to begin work on these skills. Over the past several years there has been much research done to show that the effect of what we tell ourselves repeatedly becomes our inner voice, this is the same for adults and children. As children learn to navigate different positive and negative experiences we can help them by building them up and supporting their self esteem through positive affirmations. Positive affirmations are typically a collection of short, powerful statements to be spoken out loud, to ourselves repeatedly. Affirmations are as unique and personal as the individual repeating them which gives parents and caregivers the opportunity to tailor a list made to support their specific preschooler.
The Following statements are examples of positive affirmations you can begin to teach your toddler or preschooler. Depending on the age of your child, you may choose to simply repeat the main phrase or pair it with a supporting sentence. You know your preschooler best, choose to personalize or change the wording to best fit their unique personality!

New experiences can make everyone nervous. Take a minute to remind your preschooler that they are equipped, smart and kind, ready for whatever this new experience brings!

Positive affirmations are a wonderful tool to use to empower children to be the confident, inquisitive, and kind person we know they are capable of.
