That’s why picture book series are so wonderful. If your child has enjoyed one, you can be sure the rest in the series will also be a hit. Many picture book series are prolific, giving young readers plenty of choices. Serialized books are often read over and over again and become life-long favorites. These classic series will feel like a throwback to childhood for many parents of young children.


Little Critter by Mercer Mayer

Mercer Mayer captures relatable childhood experiences in his Little Critter series. The books follow a fictional “critter” as he deals with life’s frustrations and triumphs. Many of the books help children deal with difficult emotions and learn responsibility.

Berenstain Bears by Stan and Jan Berenstain

Learn valuable life lessons with the Berenstain Bear family: Mama, Papa, Sister, and Brother. The original Berenstain Bear book was published in 1978, though most readers will remember the series as it was in the 80s and 90s. These books still hold up over 30 years after they were written. There is a book to help with almost any situation in a child’s life, including doctor visits, lying, teasing, friendship, and school.


“Peter” books by Ezra Jack Keats

Keats published these books beginning in 1963, and they are still beloved by readers across America. Peter is a young Black boy growing up in the city. “A Snowy Day” captures the magic of an adventure in the snow, while “Peter’s Chair” will help children deal with jealousy and growing up.

“Pigeon” series by Mo Willems

Choosing just one series by Mo Willems is difficult because his children’s books are all wonderful. But the Pigeon series is his most special. Follow the demanding, silly Pigeon in this over-the-top series. The Pigeon often asks for things, overreacts when he doesn’t get his way, and throws temper tantrums. He’s a right mirror for preschool-aged children while also being hilarious. The books are interactive, with the characters breaking the fourth wall to address the readers. They’re sure to be a family favorite.

Pete the Cat by Eric Litwin Pete the Cat is a cool cat who frequently uses the catchphrase “It’s all good.” The books have a rhythm to them, and some even have music to accompany them. These books serve as a good reminder not to sweat the small stuff, something kids and adults alike will appreciate.

Llama Llama by Anna Dewdny

It’s incredible how many words rhyme with Llama. You’ll be sure to hear them all in this sweet series about a young llama and his mama. The first book in the series, “Llama Llama Red Pajama,” captures bedtime worries in a way that’s sure to connect with young readers.

“Dinosaurs” series by Jane Yolen

Ever wondered how Dinosaurs say goodnight? Look no further than Jane Yolen’s “Dinosaur” series. Each book in this series answers a question about how Dinosaurs do something. Many of the books focus on skills kids themselves need to learn, such as how to stay safe, share their feelings, and count to ten.

Lola Reads series by Anna McQuinn

Lola is a preschooler who loves books. Each book in this series revolves around Lola using books to learn something new or enjoy time with her family. This series will instill a love of reading for all who enjoy the books.

Rachel Isadora fairytales

Enjoy classic fairytales reimagined in new African settings. These books are a great addition to any home library. Readers will learn classic tales like Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, and The Princess and the Pea. But they’ll also be exposed to African landscapes, dress, and traditions.

Life-Size Animal books by Teruyuki Komiya
